Raspberry Beret

Brrr, it’s cold in here!

Do you ever get that feeling where you’re just bemoaning the current season and then the next season hits you like a tonne of bricks and you’re suddenly bussing to work under 700 layers of clothing and the large, heavy woolen coats you’ve been wearing in your heavily air-conditioned environment suddenly make sense to people around you?

On the bright side, when I walk into the communal kitchen wearing ugg boots (I swear this is the only time I wear them, I swear!) and an oversized pink wool-blend tweed coat I picked up from a clothing jumble for $5 (woohoo!), people now sympathise with me (“Yes, quite cold outside, isn’t it?”) instead of giving me looks normally reserved for mentally deranged homeless people (all those side-eyes, I tell you what).

And now I have an excuse to dip back into my glorious coat collection!

This may also be the Winter of funky tights. Possibly. I haven’t decided whether these bright pink tights make me feel fabulous or ridiculous, but I’m somewhere in that zone.

How brilliantly do they match this jacket, though? When Kmart was selling a bunch of colour-blocked tights for 20c a pack, I couldn’t resist buying a pair in all three colours, and then I proceeded to shove them into a corner of my cupboard, never to be seen again until a year later, and here they are. My legs won’t be cold today, no sir.

What I wore:

  • Alex Perry Glasses – c/o Specsavers
  • Cream Angora Beret with Black Sequin Bow – Temt, $10
  • White Flocked Polka Dot Blouse – Target, $10
  • Girls’ Black Ponti Dress – Target, $15
  • Black and White Bow Belt – Mascotte, $6
  • Gold Mesh Lorus Watch – Graduation gift (similar here)
  • Pink Woolen Jacket w Leather Trim – Igedo, $15 (Although the last purchase I’ll ever make from them after how rudely they treated me when I tried to return a faulty item)
  • Opaque Magenta Tights – Kmart, 20c
  • Jo Mercer “Hooch” Mary Jane Heels – The Iconic, $60

Total: $116.20

Be A Man

Outfit: Preppy Red Blazer and Navy Shorts

Once upon a time, I used to be a huge tomboy. I acted like a boy, got a pixie cut, had a strange and unusual affinity with gay men, and wore skinny jeans in every colour of the rainbow. While I like to think of myself as quite feminine nowadays, I still adore my mother’s boxy blazers and enjoy a good pant suit every now and again.

Now that I’ve lost a stack of weight (10KG!) over the last couple of months, I find that my mother’s retro clothing no longer fits properly and I’m having to peruse through the smaller vintage sizes on the op shop racks, and that’s exactly where I found this gorgeous blazer. I’ve spoken at length about redheads wearing red and how it’s generally an ill-advised style choice, but I’ve been more drawn to the colour as of late, and who can resist a military-inspired coat with double lapels like this one, anyhow??

Paired with white and navy, and my trusty UK satchel, I feel like some kind of pattern-clashing fashion patriot. Or maybe I’m just finding any possible way to cling onto the Australian Winter before the heatwaves hit. At least I’ll always have air conditioned comfort in shopping centres, even if I don’t tend to shop in them very much anymore.

Outfit: Preppy Red Blazer and Navy Shorts

This blog might be taking yet another surprise turn, as well–I’m currently looking for full-time work, dressing to the nines, and asserting my skills towards prospective employers. It’s been a while since I looked; I didn’t know if there was a market for freelance designers trying to gain full-time employment and as such I was also probably a little scared to look, but I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with the response I’ve received from businesses! I’ve no doubt I will find a permanent placement before the year is out.

So that means I’m going to have to dress the part (sort of).

Bronze Owl Brooch
Outfit: Preppy Red Blazer and Navy Shorts

How ridiculously cute is that brooch? This is what I wore:

  • Collette Dinnigan Glasses – c/o Specsavers
  • Red and Navy Double Lapel Blazer – Salvos, $7 (I think? I bought it ages ago!)
  • Country Road White and Blue Striped Blouse – St Augustine’s Jumble, $2.70
  • Bronze Owl BroochAliExpress, $4.25 (Now ~$7)
  • Red Patent Belt – Dotti, $3.50
  • Navy Bow Print Shorts – Temt, $25
  • Betts Token Red Patent Heels – The Iconic, $21

Total: $63.45

I would have also listed the UK satchel, as it was an utter bargain buy from AliExpress for only $17, but for the life of me, I cannot find an active listing. This makes me all the more pleased that I snapped it up when I did.

Anyways, wish me luck for my following applications and interviews–I have my fingers crossed that by the time the mulberries disappear from our tree, I will be buried under a mountain of paperwork with no time for a social life and the complications it brings! I leave you today with a picture of Hugo suspiciously eyeing off a mulberry.

Until next time!

Spring Blossoms

One of my favorite parts of living in Australia is the various fauna and flora you’ll find, with the warmer climate ensuring that colourful blossoms are as perennial as the grass. I know the Morning Glory flower is known as a rabid weed that most people choose to exterminate, but I still think they make for beautiful photographs.

How cute are these pants, by the way? I’m a monthly regular at the Hamilton Church Jumble now, and every time I go, I seem to find the most wicked bargains. I was worried for a second that these pants wouldn’t fit (they are a size 12 but they’re older than I am so the actual waist size is tiny!) but they slipped on like a dream in the dressing room and I couldn’t not buy them. It’s so hard to find high-waisted pants in this kind of style nowadays. Hipster pants just don’t work for me.

What I wore:

Total: $85.88

These gold flats are basically the embodiment of the phrase “buttery soft”.

On that note, I’m quite annoyed that Mascotte has closed down permanently. I had a few male friends who raved about their selection of gorgeous round-toed leather men’s shoes (much a relief from the usual square/pointy toed hideousness you see in modern-day men’s stores) now they’re all packed up and gone. Ironically, one of the reasons I loved them so much (cheap, high-quality leather shoes) was probably the source of their downfall. You can’t have “70% off everything” sales four times a year and expect to make any kind of profit, really. I have four pairs of Mascotte shoes, and I’m really sad I didn’t go in for more when I had the opportunity.

I basically cherish these ones like they’re actually made of gold.

A Perfect Day

When it rains, it pours. Just as I was enjoying braving the open world in my short pastel skirts and sleeveless blouses, along comes another reminder from Mother Nature that it’s still Winter in Brisbane. As I’m incredibly susceptible to the cold, I’ve taken to mostly hibernating inside, basking against Hugo’s eternal internal furnace (does that count as alliteration, do you think?). But when I do leave the house, I still like to dress up.

I am pretty much smitten with every element in this outfit. It’s something I’ve worn a lot in a few different combinations but never really bothered to document. This coat is pure magic, a lovely deep magenta with a double-breasted feature that hits just the right length. I documented it last year among some of my better purchases in June as a testament to the power of patience when bargain hunting. (I am pretty sure I called up the city ValleyGirl store every couple of days after spotting it to inquire if they were having a coat sale yet, sometimes realising how obsessive that made me look and giving them nothing other than a few panicked gasps of air before hanging up and resolving not to call them again. Sorry, ValleyGirl employees..)

As for the dress, it’s also another steal from ValleyGirl–last one of its kind on the rack, I bought this several years ago and still wear it as a work dress, always with various different collared blouses paired underneath it. The perfect style for layering!

The close-ups I wanted to share mainly revolve around the watch and the heels. They’re both eBay bargains! The watch is simply amazing; I wanted a gold mesh watch with a white face that I wouldn’t be so scared to wear with casual outfits, and I found the perfect one on eBay so decided to splash out (my definition of that phrase, anyways). As for the shoes, I’ve started my foray into second-hand eBay auctions and these shoes are the product of one of my first wins. Classic d’orsay style, stable heel, black patent leather, scalloped design and little gold buckles–these were too cute to pass up.

  • Elche Collection Black Patent Scalloped D’Orsay Pumps – eBay, $20

Total: $106.30

That’s the first time in a long while I’ve went over my self-imposed limit! Generally I don’t include watches in the outfit total, though. I don’t know why, I guess I see them like I see bags, as superfluous pieces that don’t really impact the look of the outfit that much.

Speaking of bags, among much of the things you haven’t seen that I wear constantly, is this Marc Jacobs-inspired French Bulldog design that you see on his loafers–but in bag form. I don’t know what crafty person thought to themselves, “Hey, the dog flats are a big seller, let’s make a bag version!”, but I am glad that kind of ingenuity exists. They’re cute, roomy as heck, attract compliments like poop attracts flies, and CHEAP!

Anyways, that’s all from me today–I’ll leave you guys with a photo of Hugo basking on our wet grass (thanks, dog) and a clip that inspired the title of today’s post. Does anyone recognize which famous children’s cartoon it belongs to? All you 90’s Australian kids will be hit with a wave of nostalgia, I promise you that!

Summer Bouquet

I know it’s not Summer anymore but whew does it feel like it. Just when I thought Summer was officially over, we had a little bump in temperature which has led to many days at a time spent basking in the air conditioning of my home and car. I’m still favoring the shorter black skirts at work because our air conditioner never seems cold enough. First world problems–seems like just yesterday I was bemoaning the frosty, arctic temperatures/temperaments at the office where I used to work and now I’m complaining that it’s not cold enough.

To be fair, I do a lot of running around in my current job and did a lot of sitting at my previous work.

Speaking of which, I’ll have to show you the kind of outfits I’m wearing to Mascotte at some point–it just seems too hot to be standing around the yard shooting pictures in black clothing.

Anyways, here is the long-awaited appearance of the Mombasa floral shorts! I didn’t wear them very much for a couple of reasons.

  • They were two sizes too big for me because I waited for a sale instead of buying them at $50 and they only had a size 12 pair left.
  • Th’heck am I gonna wear with lavender shorts–my least favorite colour?

That all changed when I bought these simple gold ballet flats from Mascotte. These are my default shoes if I don’t know what I want to wear on my feet. They’re honestly lifesavers. A cushy, buttery-soft, pair of lifesavers. Click on any picture to open up the lightbox for a closer look.

And here I am practicing my “Blue Steel” gaze–Not really, the sun was getting in my eyes.

The particularly observant will notice that my entire outfit is floral-based, from shorts to the leaf-shaped collar clips to the rings from ASOS and the gold-studded blouse from Temt. Once upon a time, I told myself I wouldn’t wear florals because I hated them, but it seems like I’m really becoming drawn to big blooms and patterns that emulate nature nowadays, and I love it.

What I’m wearing:

  • DIY Pink Leaf Earrings as collar clips – Big W, $2
  • Flower Studded Pattern Blouse – Temt, $10
  • Triple Ring Pack – ASOS, $5
  • Gold Watch – AliExpress, $6 (Available in different colours)
  • Gold Bracelet – Graduation gift
  • Patent Leather Lilac BeltAliExpress, $2.30 (Lots of colours, but the “baby pink” is definitely lilac)
  • Floral Shorts – Mombasa, $25
  • Gold Leather Flats – Mascotte, $48

Total: $98.30

Until next time, readers, stay cool and keep a sharp eye out for that box-pleated skirt tutorial. Coming up soon! :)
